License Types and Requirements

Type of License Qualifications required for granting license
Resident Education:
  • Bachelor degree in Medicine/Dental Medicine from an accredited school of medicine/dentistry.
  • Passed Bahrain Medical/Dental Licensure Exam.
  • 1 year internship for Bahrainis.
  • 5 years experience for non Bahrainis.
Senior resident Education:
  • Fulfills resident qualifications, plus the following
    - Passed Part 1 of Arab Board certification/Membership General Dental Surgery (MGDS) OR Equivalent certification (specialized diploma) OR Master Degree in medicine/clinical dentistry.
Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Resident for Bahrainis.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Resident for non Bahrainis holding Master degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a Resident for non Bahrainis holding Specialized Diploma.
Specialist Education:
  • Fulfills Senior Resident qualifications, plus the following:
    - Passed Arab Board Certifying Exam/Membership of Medicine or Dental Surgery (MGDS) or equivalent OR PhD in medicine/dental specialty.
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Resident for non Bahrainis.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Senior Resident for Bahrainis, 6 months of which after passing the above exams.
  • 8 years of experience as a Senior Resident for Master holder.
Consultant Education:
  • Fulfills Specialist qualifications, plus the following:
Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Specialist in a teaching hospital after obtaining the highest degree.


How to Apply

  • New License
    Here you can learn about the key steps of obtaining a new license for physicians and dentists in Bahrain.
    Key steps
    1. Apply for a position as a physician/dentist in Bahrain and get a job offer
    2. Obtain a work permit from your prospective employer (non-Bahrainis only)
    3. Retrieve an application form from your prospective employer, or the Licensure Office, or download it from the website
    4. Get a medical fitness exam at Al Razy Health Center (Phone (973) 1 725 6888) in order to get a health fitness certificate (for locals only, non-locals should do fitness test upon arrival to Bahrain)
    5. Fill out the application form
    6. Submit the completed application form (excluding verification forms) to the Licensure Office by mail or in person together with the letter from your prospective employer, 2 recent photographs, copy of birth certificate, copy of front pages of passport showing full name and nationality, copy of CPR (if you have one), statutory evidence of any name change, educational and professional certificates, transcript, CV, a copy of registration in another country, and a copy of the health fitness certificate issued by Al Razy health center
    7. If you do not already have an application number, receive an application number from the Licensure Office either by phone, email or post once the above documents have been received
    8. Fill out four verification forms with application number and name. Send one to the licensing authority where you are registered, one to the school where you have obtained your medical degree and two to previous supervisors (non-Bahraini graduates only)
    9. Once all verification forms have been received in sealed envelopes, the medical committee and the medical profession registrar will review your file, make a decision regarding licensure and prepare your license
    10. Receive notification that your license has been approved or rejected from the Licensure Office either by phone, email or mail
    11. If approved, go to the cashier at the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health and pay the license fee
    12. Bring your receipt to the Licensure Office where you can pick up the license

  • Renew License
    Here you can learn about the key steps of renewing your physician/dentist license in Bahrain.
    Key steps
    1. Retrieve an application form from your employer, the Licensure Office or download it from the website
    2. Fill out the application form
    3. Submit entire application together with reference letter from current or previous employer by mail or in person
    4. Wait for the medical profession registrar to review your file and approve your renewal of license
    5. Receive notification from Licensure Office by phone, email or mail that your license renewal has been approved or rejected
    6. If approved, bring your old license to the cashier at the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health and pay for the license
    7. Bring your receipt together with your old license to the Licensure Office where you can pick up your renewed license

There are three different application forms for physicians & dentists:

  1. Application form for initial license to practice
  2. Application form for renewal of license to practice
  3. Application form for visiting physicians

License fees should be paid at the cashier in the Directorate of Finance at the Ministry of Health.
